Are Heated Hoodies Worth It? How USB Heated Clothing Works
Share
Short answer: a heated hoodie is worth it if you spend long stretches outside without moving much: early starts in a cold driveway, a morning on the riverbank, a game on the sidelines, a few hours in an unheated garage. It makes its own warmth from a USB power bank, and with the battery unplugged it works as an ordinary hoodie. If you're mostly active outside, hiking uphill or riding hard, a good layering system usually keeps you warm without a battery.
How does a USB heated hoodie work?
Thin heating elements are sewn into panels inside the hoodie. A short cable runs from those panels to a pocket, where it plugs into a USB power bank. When power flows, the elements warm up and pass that heat to your body.
That is the key difference from fleece or sherpa. Insulation only holds on to heat your body is already making. A heated layer adds heat of its own, which is why it helps most when you're standing still and your body isn't producing much.
Where should a heated hoodie put the heat?
Your core, shoulders and neck are where cold feels worst, so that is where heating panels do the most good. A single panel in the middle of the back warms one patch. More zones spread the warmth out.
The Men's Heated Hoodie has 26 heating zones across the hood, shoulders, back and belly, so the heat reaches your neck and head as well as your torso. A half-zip collar lets heat out when you get moving, and a zip pocket on the sleeve holds keys or earbuds.
What power bank do you need for a heated hoodie?
- Output: most USB heated clothing runs on 5V, the standard output of a phone power bank. Check the product page before you buy one.
- Connector: make sure the plug on the hoodie's cable fits a port on the power bank.
- Size: it has to fit the battery pocket without dragging the hoodie down. A 10000mAh bank is a common middle ground between run time and weight.
Run time depends on the power bank's capacity, how cold it is outside and how hard the heating has to work, so test it at home before you rely on it for a full day out. Our heated hoodie doesn't include a battery. You can add a matching 5V 10000mAh power bank (4.15 x 2.6 x 0.94 in, 7 oz) from the options on the product page, or use a compatible one you already own.
Heated hoodie vs. heated jacket vs. layering
| Heated hoodie | Heated jacket | Layering, no battery | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warmth when standing still | Yes, from the battery | Yes, from the battery | Only what your layers hold in |
| Wind protection | Low on its own; add a shell on windy days | Often has a wind-resistant outer | Depends on your outer layer |
| Bulk | Low to medium | Medium to high | Adds up as you add layers |
| Without a battery | Works as a regular hoodie | Works as a regular jacket | Always works |
| Best for | Cold mornings, fishing, sidelines, garage work | Long cold days in wind and weather | Active use: hiking, cycling, shoveling |
A heated hoodie and layering aren't either-or. On a windy day the heated hoodie becomes your warm middle layer under a shell. Our guide to the 3-layer system shows how the pieces fit together.
Is a heated hoodie safe to wear?
Used sensibly, yes. A few habits keep it that way:
- Use a power bank from a source you trust, with the output the hoodie calls for.
- Unplug it when you take the hoodie off, and don't sleep in it with the heat on.
- If any area feels too hot, unplug it straight away rather than waiting it out.
- Keep the power bank and the connector dry.
- If you have reduced feeling in your skin, check with your doctor before using heated clothing.
- When you fly, carry the power bank in your carry-on, not your checked bag. Some airlines also limit using power banks during the flight, so check before you go.
How do you clean a heated hoodie?
Always follow the care label, because heated garments differ. The label on our heated hoodie says do not wash. Unplug and remove the power bank first, then wipe the surface gently with a damp cloth.
How should a heated hoodie fit?
Close enough that the heating panels sit near your body, with room for a base layer underneath. On our heated hoodie, the garment chest runs from 42.1 in at size S to 55.9 in at 5XL. For a relaxed fit, choose a size whose garment chest is about 4 to 6 inches larger than your own chest measurement. Our sweatshirt fit and size guide explains how to measure.
Frequently asked questions
Can you wear a heated hoodie without the battery?
Yes. With the power bank unplugged it works as a regular hoodie, so you can wear it all fall and winter.
Does a heated hoodie work in the rain?
A hoodie isn't a rain layer. In wet weather, wear a water-resistant shell over it and keep the power bank and connector dry.
Will any power bank work with a heated hoodie?
Most phone power banks with 5V USB output will power it, as long as the connector fits and the bank fits the pocket. Check the product page for the exact requirement.
How long does a heated hoodie stay warm?
It depends on the power bank's capacity, the temperature outside and how much heat the hoodie is drawing. Test a full charge at home so you know what to expect.
Is a heated hoodie a good gift?
It's a strong pick for anyone who always feels cold or spends long hours outside. See our winter gift guide for more ideas.
